Over the last few weeks there has been a lot of discussion regarding a new Canadian comedy sitcom known as “Little Mosque on the Prairie” aired on Canada’s CBC network, it centers on a community of Muslims who have moved to a rural part of Canada. CBC believes that the series will break down stereotypes and improve relations between Canada’s Christian majority and the Muslim community. The show drew two million viewers for its debut. Since then, Muslims have been commenting on the sitcom, with many believing that this is a positive step for Islam and the Muslims, and with others less than enthusiastic about its significance. After going through the first three episodes I was compelled to write something.
As many of us are aware of, as Muslims our constitution is the Qur’an and the Sunnah, and when it comes to contemporary issues we have to take the Qur’an and Sunnah as our governing rule of law and our measuring tool to reach a conclusion. So what I present here is not just my personal opinion that I came up with by following my ego, rather it is based upon supportive evidence from the Qur’an and Sunnah as understood by the early Muslims consisting of the Companions and all those who followed in their footsteps. So let us take the Qur’an and Sunnah as our legislator, and let us look at how our pious predecessors dealt with situations like this, and then after the truth is made clear from the falsehood let us submit to the truth, that is if we really claim to be Muslims.
Anyone who watched the first few episodes will have realized that the producer has an agenda that she is trying to push forward, a message that she is trying to get across to both the Muslims and the non-Muslims in Canada, this agenda can be summarized in the following list of points:
1. The Message to the Muslims:
a) We need to put the Traditional Orthodox version of Islam behind us and move on to adopt the Western Modernist Liberal Progressive approach to Islam.
b) We need to adopt the Western approach to Women’s rights (Feminist approach).
c) We need to integrate into the Western society.
d) The young Muslims must look down upon the ‘old-style backward’ Muslims and must take a stand against against them.
2. The Message to the non-Muslims:
a) There are extreme elements in the Muslim community who don’t want to progress into the modern world, whereas the majority of the Muslims do.
b) Islam can be changed and watered down to meet the standards of the Modern Western world. c) The Muslim community is always in conflict and can never come to terms with each other.
Examples of this agenda being pushed forward:
1. Mockery of serious devout practicing Muslims and displaying them as being backward people who have no affiliation with modern day society.
2. Un-Islamic music being played in the background.
3. The Hijab not being worn properly by the Muslim women.
4. Over-intermingling between the genders.
5. A clean shaven Imam.
6. Shaking of the hands between the genders, especially the Imam.
7. The flirting of the girl with the Imam.
8. The claim that Islam is democracy.
9. The barrier issue between the men and the women.
10. The Imam asking the reverend for guidance and advice (as if Islam does not have the solution to every problem).
11. Muslim spouses making out in public.
Now I’m not going to reply to each of these points respectfully, rather I’m going to comment on the general idea that the show is portraying, and that is the idea of modernism and progressiveness that the Muslims must adopt.
Firstly, it is important to know that the modernist movement that is being spread among the Muslims in the West can be traced back to, ideologically at least, one sect in the past. This sect is known as the Mu’tazilah, which dates back to the third century after Hijrah. Although they accepted the Qur’an and Sunnah they made their own Ta’weel (interpretation) of it, and said that the ‘Aql (intellect) takes precedence over the Naql (the texts of the Qur’an and Sunnah). However, over time this school of thought died out. The modernist movement of today did not evolve from them, however they are very similar to them. The modernist movement is saying that the West and the world has changed and that Islam must become “civilized” to meet this change, and it is trying to harmonize Islam with modern values of human rights and freedom. So they look at the Qur’an and Sunnah and try to interpret it according to their own views based on the modern western world. This leads them to reject the texts of the Qur’an and Sunnah outright, or to try to reinterpret them.
The main factors for the spread of the modernist movement in the West:
1. A lack of Islamic knowledge from its correct sources.
2. A lack of scholars available to teach the people and to refute the modernist ideology.
3. Being disconnected from the Muslim world, its people, its Islamic based principles, values, traditions which go back 14 centuries.
4. It allows Muslims to become part of and integrate into the Western society without having to be recognized as Muslims.
5. It grants Muslim women equal rights as Muslim men, and encourages the woman to forget about her modesty and take on the role that Allah has specified for men.
6. It allows Muslims to practice an easy and flexible version of Islam, far from its correct teachings.
7. It calls for an end to religious differences between Islam and Christianity, and promotes inter-faith dialogue.
8. Much of the non-Islamic literature, scholars, and institutions in the West reflect the modernist thinking.
9. It is endorsed by the private and governmental sectors, and is therefore recognized as the mainstream version of Islam that is to be accepted.
Some of the main points that act as the driving force for the modernist movement:
1. They look to the West and try to reinterpret the “old religion” with modern science and modern times. They assume that:
a) The present situation is advanced or different, so you hear some of them say: “this is not the Prophet’s time!”
b) Religion is relative to time and place, so you hear them say: “therefore we need to judge Islam in light of modern science!”
c) The way of thinking of a society is based on its environment, so they say: “therefore we must practice Islam according to the Western environment we live in!”
2. The methodology they use is the way they mislead people to the wrong conclusions. They claim to be scientific, but they are usually inconsistent or have no proof or foundation for their beliefs. Some of the means and principles they use include:
a) The Sunnah and Hadeeth. They claim the Qur’an to be authentic and that they only follow “authentic” Ahadeeth. However, the method they use to judge the authenticity of Ahadeeth is the ‘Aql (intellect). And although they claim to follow only “authentic” Ahadeeth, it turns out that many of them use “weak” and “fabricated” Ahadeeth to help prove their points and arguments. It is also to be noted here that they especially dislike Ahadeeth which have specific meanings and prefer ones which only have general principles.
b) Vague terms without defining them. They use terms like democracy, freedom, and equality, but they never define what they mean by them. The danger in using vague terms is that a knowledgeable person will pass over the word or concept thinking they meant the Islamic or acceptable definition while in fact they did not, while others may believe what they are saying is true.
c) Concealing relevant information that is available on the subject. That is, from the Qur’an and Sunnah. They only present that which will support their views. This tactic is used to avoid beliefs that they do not like, so they just do not mention them.
d) Forcing their interpretation onto the text by using their ‘Aql (intellect). Many of them say that Islam is the “rational” religion. This is true if you mean everything is from Allah and there is no contradiction, but to say that we can study everything in Islam by judging it with only our intellect is unacceptable and there is also no proof for this. To avoid implementing what the Qur’an and Sunnah says, they say we need to follow the “spirit” of Islam and not worry about the laws in specific. But it is clear from the Qur’an and Sunnah that we are to take both.
e) Strange and rejected opinions. They try to revive some of the old opinions that got buried over time because the scholars rejected them, and this is because these opinions help them to prove their points, and so they say that such and such writer said it in the past so it must be a valid opinion. They try to open the door to these opinions and choose what is the most suitable and easy to follow. However, we are supposed to look for the opinions that are the closest to the truth, not the most suitable and easiest.
Now that the reality of the modernist movement has been made clear, the question arises: what do the true teachings of Islam have to say about all of this?
One of the fundamental aspects of Islam is complete submission to what has come to us of this religion from the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his Companions, for they knew his Sunnah best, they loved him more, and they followed the teachings of Islam better than those who came after them. We have been commanded to follow and forbidden to innovate. This is because of the perfection of Islam and the sufficiency of what Allah and His Messenger (SAW) have given to us. Then there came after the Companions the Tabi’een, they were the followers of the Companions, they were the best of generations after the Companions, and they took their understanding of Islam directly from the Companions. After that there came the Taba-Tabi’een, they were the followers of the Tabi’een, they were the best of generations after the Tabi’een, and they took their understanding of Islam directly from the Tabi’een. These are the three best generations of Islam that we as Muslims have been ordered to follow. All the succeeding generations who followed in their footsteps till our time are known as Ahl-us-Sunnah Wal-Jama‘ah (those who adhere to the Sunnah – the narrations of the Prophet (SAW) – and the Jama‘ah – the beliefs and methodology of the general body of the Companions). Ahl-us-Sunnah Wal-Jama’ah believes that there is only one true Islam that will be accepted by Allah, and this is proven by the Qur'an and the Sunnah:
1. Allah said: “Truly, the religion with Allah is Islam.” [Aal ‘Imran 3:19]
2. And He said: “And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him.” [Aal ‘Imran 3:85]
3. And He said: “This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” [Al-Ma’idah 5:3]
4. Abdullah bin Mas’ud (RA) related that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) drew a line with his hand (in the sand) and said: “This is Allah’s path, leading straight.” He then drew lines to the right and the left of that line and said: “These are the other paths, on each path there is a devil who calls to it.” He then recited: “And verily, this is My straight path, so follow it, and follow not other paths, for they will separate you away from His path.” [Al-An’am 6:153] [Ahmad]
5. The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Indeed the children of Isra’eel split up into seventy-two sects, and my Ummah will split up into seventy-three sects, all of them are in the Fire, except one.” It was said: Who is the (saved) one? He replied: “That which I and my Companions are upon.” [Tirmidhi]
6. And he (SAW) said: “For indeed those of you who live after me will see much disagreement, so stick to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly-guided Caliphs after me. Hold onto it and bite down on it with your molar teeth (i.e. strictly adhere to it). And beware of newly invented matters, for verily every newly invented matter is a Bid’ah and every Bid’ah is a going astray.” [Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi]
7. And he (SAW) said: “There will not cease to be a group from my Ummah victorious upon the truth, not being harmed by those who oppose them, until the command of Allah comes, and they are upon that.” [Muslim]
8. And he (SAW) said: “This knowledge will be carried by the trustworthy ones of each generation. They will expel from it the alteration of those going beyond bounds, the false claims of the liars, and the false interpretations of the ignorant ones.” [Bayhaqi]
All of these above statements are clear-cut supporting evidence that prove that the only true version of Islam that Allah will accept is that Islam that was practiced and understood by the Prophet (SAW) and his Companions and all those who followed them till the Day of Resurrection. As for those who go off on a different path, other than that of the Prophet (SAW) and his Companions, and come up with their own understanding of how Islam should be practiced, such as the modernist understanding of Islam, then none of them are following the true and correct teachings of Islam, and it will not be accepted from them by Allah.
It is important to note here that there will be those among the Muslims who will say that there is no need to be so harsh or extreme. In response to this, I say that the truth is clear from the falsehood, the choice is yours to either accept or reject, because in the end it doesn’t matter whether you feel your opinion is correct or I feel my opinion is correct, rather we must go back to the fundamentals. As Muslims we’ve been ordered to submit completely to the will of Allah, not partially, Allah says:
“O you who believe! Enter into Islam completely, and follow not the footsteps of Shaytan. Verily, he is to you an open enemy.” [Al-Baqarah 2:208]

"Little Mosque" depends of offensive stereotypes for its humour.
Also, while at times funny, I do wonder about how "real" the situation is. I once saw a show about how the Nazis made two propaganda films about the conflict between the British and the Irish. The films, at least according to those who were interviewed who had seen them were quite good. The only problem was that the people in the movies were not Irish. What I mean by that was that the culture of the Irish portrayed in the films in no way reflected actual Irish culture as I guess the Germans who wrote, produced, and acted in the movies never took the time to get to understand the traditions and feel of the Irish people. It just wasn't important to them because in the end it had nothing to do with the Irish. It was as one commentator of the movies said "Germans talking to Germans".
And that is kind of what I am getting with the "Little Mosque" show. In the end it isn't really about small town Saskatchewan or Muslim communities living within small town Saskatchewan. In the end what it comes down to is just Liberal Urbanite Canadians talking to Liberal Urbanite Canadians, with their political message being far more important to them than whether or not the situation portrayed reflects a real situation in the country accurately enough.
By the way, why does "The She Mayor" remind me so much of the mayor on South Park?
Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.
Jazaakallaahu khairan akhi. It's nice to see a blog from a student of knowledge for a change. Might just want to change the background design though. The colours seem a little 'fruity'. :)

oh you are so out of touch from reality,
Thats the problem with people living in countries that don't eveolve, you get stuck in these 14th centry paradigms and cannot see beyond that.
As life evolves, so do situations and certain issues (like women having to cover) no longer have any value.
Times evolve, countries evolve, society eveolves, people evolve, the mindset and human nature evolves, Muslims do NOT!
Maybe Hell ain't so bad a place after all.
Oh i see, the societies that have evolved meaning the constant rape, murder over what color i'm wearing or what "set" I claim, the need for security for women when they leave public areas at night, e.g. TTC offers a special stop for women at night = schools offer security escorts to their car for women who study/work at night, the society that kills its own people for monetary gain - if you really need an example for that lets use Tobacco companies as a big one [the biggest terrorist of them all]. So much for evolving since the murder/crime/rape rate has increased over the past 30 years, wow to think how much we've evolved!! Just because certain countries "seem" free and ready to "unite" doesn't mean it is so. EVERY society and EVERY person has problems, only an ignorant person would claim otherwise. Yes including Muslim countries, but at least i won't get shot because I wore the wrong color.
MashaAllah!!!
An excellent read. Very thought provoking. It truely is sad to see the change and evolution that has occured in society.
For Anonymous #2. YES, HELL is a SCARY and "bad place".
Secondly, as a women who covers, my hijab (cover) IS of value to me. It is my modesty, my dignity, my respect, and most of all my OBEDIENCE to my creator, ALLAH. Don't be so narrow minded. We aren't supposed to assimilate and change as the society does but instead accomodation is the correct terminology as was done for Women and Blacks in the workforce and in public schools. What happend to the so-called "FREEDOM" of expression, beliefs and religion???
Religion SHOULD be stable and not change as a new hair do or clothing style!!!

Jazakom Allah khairan, but I think you came down a bit too harsh on the show. Although there is a lot I too disagree with in the show such as the "imaam" and how he acts, I would have preffered an older, more modest and religious Imaam who can actually "TEACH" us Islam even in a show like this. I also agree on your point about making out in public, flirting etc. BUT....
I do not think that the producer had an "agenda" as you called it. We do not know the hearts and YOU do not know the hearts and if you think you can judge her, then remember you will be judged by the One who DOES know the hearts. I think she was simply trying to portray to non-Muslims that we are just normal people, who differ in opinion (and we do a lot!). It is sad that that conflict we live in is the BIGGEST reality in our community. We are ALWAYS differing! The reason is because we did move away from practicing islam properly.
One thing I really dislike about your comments here... is that you as many muslims do... were picking on every little thing... this is the dissaster in our society. And this is something she was trying to show in the show. We Muslims should stop looking at Islam as Salaah and Zakaah and whatever only. Islam first and foremost... is behaviour.. and Adab etc. When we first establish the whole picture of Islam, then we can worry about perfecting the minor details.
I hope that Muslims when watching this show can actually look at it in a less critical eye. Look at the goods in it and then at the bad. I have a Christian friend who watched it and said she LEARNED a lot about Islam and asked me a lot of questions. That's positive isn't it?!
Muslims need to start looking at the humor in things too. We are sooooooo focus on salah and worship and quran and and and.. we forget that having some fun is part of our deen.
Muslims who think that way brothers and sisters... are pushing everyone away!
Jazakom Allah khairan
Oh, and I forgot to say... I find it funny... that Muslims will take so much of their time... making a whole blog... just to comment on a show!
Please! Don't you have things to do! Honestly... just speaking about myself... I got work today (I leave 7 and get back home at 7), then I got a halaqa to attend to (8:30 till 11:00 usually) and then I got to go sleep to wake up early for prayers and for my next working day!
Muslims... please! Stop being so paranoid.
AssalaamuAlaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakathu, Jazak Allaah Khairun. I agree with you 100%. I only saw trailers of the show, but I was immediately struck by the deviation depicted. May Allaah reward you for commenting on this and getting people to think. Millions of people will watch this show and be influenced by it, so it is great that you took the time to watch and analyze it and present this blog. We need more work like this to focus us on the fitan (trials and tests) that we face and how to overcome them by sticking to our noble religion. May Allah raise the ranks of all the Muslims and bring us all back to the straight path of Islaam. Ameen.
Salam Brother,
Interesting read, I was with you until you signed your name stating your from Saudia Arabia. That's when your whole argument lost credibility with me.
That country is the most racist and sexist country on the planet. Saudia Arabia is more racist against Muslims then non-muslims. So if you really want to change things, then step away from the key board, and stop changing the country that you currently rside in. Get the citizens of S.A. start practicing Quran and Sunnah first.Everything is bidah in S.A.
And if you are actually a Canadian Citizen, and living in S.A. for economic reasons, then please come back to Canada and show the Brother's and Sisters the light.
Finally, stop getting so worked up over a TV show...the show will get cancelled by the end of the year. Its a not a funny show at all. And if you really care, then wake up in the middle of the night, pray tahajud, and cry in front of Allah for the Ummah's guidance.
Assalamu Alaikum,
I'd like to take the opportunity to reply to some of the comments posted above:
1. To Anonymous #2: Like I mentioned in my original post, we as Muslims put the Qur'an and Sunnah in front of us and judge things according to it, and so the point that you are trying to make by saying that the whole world evolves and moves forward and the Muslims do not, is a rejected point if it was to be measured according to the Qur'an and Sunnah, because Islam does allow us to evolve and move forward as situations evolve, however the question is: how far do we go and what is the limit to that? The answer to that is: that it is bound to the limits and boundaries that the Qur'an and Sunnah has placed for us, so as Muslims we do not cross the boundaries that Allah and His Messenger (SAW) have placed for us, even if it be for the sake of evolving and advancing forward.
2. To Anonymous #5: Wa Iyyak...
Firstly, I say that the producer does have an agenda, and her agenda is very clear as I already explained, and how do I know this? Because I know the producer, her family and my family go back for almost 30 years, so I know what type of Islam she promotes...
Secondly, I agree with you that Islam is not just Salah and Zakah, etc, but I disagree with you when you say that Islam first and foremost is behaviour and Adab, etc, because the foundation of Islam is the belief system ('Aqeedah), this is what I was trying to point out in my original post, and yes, after we establish the correct 'Aqeedah in the hearts of the Muslims we can start working on the minor details...
Thirdly, I agree with you when you say that we have to start looking at the humor in things too because humor is part of Islam, however that is only when the humor is within the boundaries set by Allah and His Messenger (SAW), and apparantly the humor in this TV show went beyond those boundaries...
Fourthly, you accused me of making a whole blog just to comment on the show, I'll quote directly from you when you said: "We do not know the hearts and YOU do not know the hearts and if you think you can judge her, then remember you will be judged by the One who DOES know the hearts." So the same goes with you, because my intention of starting this blog was not just to comment on the show, I had the intention to start a blog for the past several months however I was too busy to start one, now that I finally got the time I started one, and it just so happened to be that the first post was the comment on the show.
3. To Anonymous #6:
Firstly, I am a Canadian born and raised citizen currently residing in Saudi Arabia, but does that really matter? What if I was in Canada or Africa or China when I wrote that? I have no affiliation to any country except that I came to study in Madeenah, the city of the Prophet (SAW), and if I go back to Canada I do intend to share what I have with my brothers and sisters...
Secondly, I'm not getting so worked up over a TV show, I realized the need to post that comment because of how many Muslim Canadians are being deceived into thinking that the show is representing the true teachings of Islam, and by the time the show gets cancelled at the end of the year enough damage would have been done upon the Muslims if no one had spoken out.
M. Kamil Ahmad
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Masha Allah brother M. Kamil Ahmad,
I do agree with you on all aspects and I believe it is especially important for everyone to be aware of the messages expressed through the media. In many cases there are agenda's trying to be pushed through and we must at least be aware of them. If we are going to watch these shows that is one thing, but we must be aware of what the actual purpose of these shows are.
Thank you brother.
why is anyone watching tv in the first place? are you learning the deen from it? if you are, than by all means please continue. Do you have that much time to even waste 30 min on a show? ask yourself what can be learnt in one minute, than ask how about 30 min? If more Muslims would not watch TV [since 95% of it contains either forbidden or close to forbidden things on there] and concentrate on studying the deen and taking care of their families etc. we would have more important issues to discuss rather than these minor ones. By the way, If you think Saudi Arabia is Racist and Sexist, try going to the States, you may not see it in your face if your a certain race nowadays, but damn is it there. Every country has this issue, whether Muslim or not, but if your Muslim and you understand the way shaytaan works and how he is trying to misguide others, than what makes you think he wouldn't try extra hard in Muslim countries? Just an ignorant perspective for a confused individual who thinks Saudi Arabia is a problem in comparison to all the rasicm and hatered other countries have spread. Go back to history class.
I can tolerate racism in the West, but I can`t tolerate racism from Muslims against muslims. Especially muslims who are the keepers of the two holiest places on earth, and who preach following the prophet, yet they are so racist...I rather be called anything by a non-muslim then be treated like that by a fellow muslim.
Of course we all need to wake up and be better people...May Allah Guide us All.
Salaaams to everyone. I enjoyed reading your article on the show, but as a Muslim in Canada, one who describes himself proudly as a practicing Muslim; I think you're being far too harsh. Its good that we have a show that not only plays on apparent Muslim steriotypes, but also pokes fun at the apparent religiosity of rural Christians in the midwest. The over the top radio host, the backward yokel who calls the 'Terrorist Hotline". Its funny and should be taken with a grain of salt, not to be taken literally as though most Canadians are that backward. And if you recall in the first show, the antoginism is largely against the fact that he's from Toroto, and not a Muslim.
This show brings everyday Islam into the life of people who have no idea what Muslims are. The characters are well spoken and educated, though I can't say much about the African fem, whats with the thick accent? My mother is African and speaks regular English. Notwithstanding a few details lacking in objectivity, i.e moving around during salat, the show is a welcome breath of fresh air, not some conspiracy to westernize Muslims and bring us down even lower.. Can we get any lower? :)
I read your article on the Little Mosque on the Praire. To be honest, I am a practicing Muslima, living in Toronto Canada. I work, I have a young daughter and a husband. When I see the show, I don't think of the creater sending a message but letting non-Muslims see a little humour in what we deal with. I'll agree with you on the clean-shaven Imam, the handshaking, and the "flirtation"...but in a lot of other aspects, I find that the show IS portraying issues that we have to deal with in this society. I don't think there is anything wrong with two men of faith talking - do you not see it as a younger man of faith talking to an older main of faith. Does Islam not talk about "People of the book" (meaning Muslims, Jews, and Christians).
Also, you allude to "feminists". I am a practising Muslima BECAUSE Islam is a so-called feminist religion. It is a Christian concept that makes a woman take on her husbands last name - as she becomse the property of her husband. It is Islam that allowed Women to be free-thinkers, to work, to own property, etc. Did not Hazarat Kadijha own a company? Did now Hazarat Zubaida make horse saddles. Did Islam not have the first FEMALE judge?
When you talk about your issues, I suggest you look at Islam not through the eyes of a Saudi-Arab - but through the eyes of a Muslim who is part of an Ummah.
The show is light-hearted and may break down barriers and stop Candians fearing that which they don't understand.
M Kamal Ahmad, I love you for sake of Allah. May Allah keep you steadfast on religion, and give more beneficial knowledge.
To the people who is criticizing the author of blog, you keep mentioning him being in Saudi Arabia and blah blah. Who cares, he can have written same anywhere, and he has not mentioned any references but from Quran or Sunnah, nothing from king Abdullah or even any Saudi scholar. So why dont you guys counter him from Quran and Sunnah rather labeling him Saudi (which he is not).
Assalaamu alaykum bro,
Your comments are on the mark, masha Allah. May Allah reward you. The truth is that shows like this are a manifestation of a serious problem with the thinking and knowledge base of our Ummah that needs to change.
ma'assalaam,
Ravenous
Assalamu Alykum,
I woud just like to remind the muslims that Allah says in the Quran:
49:1 O Ye who believe! Put not yourselves forward before Allah and His Messenger. but fear Allah. for Allah is He Who hears and knows all things.
As for what brother Kamil has wrote:
It is obviously the correct muslim outlook on such an unacceptable effort to try and modernize islam. We ask Allah to guide the producer.
O muslim do not forget that Allah says in his book:
10:32 Such is Allah, your real Cherisher and Sustainer: apart from truth, what (remains) but error? How then are ye turned away?
Assalamu Alaikum,
Thanks for shedding some light on this issue, Kamil - and specifically because after reading it, I can clearly see it is not from yourself, but based on the Qur'an and Sunnah.
I just wanted to respond to Anonymous, who wrote on Feb.8,2007:
Islam is far removed from feministic ideology. If you truly understand what feminism is, you will realize that it involves much more than just not taking on your husband's name, or owning property - a topic that would need a discussion on its own. So please do not relate feminism to Islam.
Furthermore, being a practicing Muslimah in the West myself, I feel that the issues Kamil has spoken about are clearly through the eyes of Islam - please show me with concrete evidence how it is not. Where has something been mentioned that is not supported by the Qur'an and/or Sunnah? Clearly, even if we are living in the West, these 2 sources are the basis of our Deen.
Finally, as you allude to, Islam is not a difficult religion - but that does not mean we need to comprimise it to please the world - it is already easy to practice it as it is. If Allah wills, He will get His Message across to whomsoever He Wills. Whether this show exists or not, there will be people who fear Muslims and others to whom Allah will guide - He does not need us to break His Laws to do this.

May Allah give you stength akhy. I live in the United States and when I saw this show I thought the same thing you did. May Allah increase you in knowledge and wisdom. Wassalam Alaikum
"I do not think that the producer had an "agenda" as you called it. "
to the contrary, the producer of the show made a documentary, Th emosque and me (if i recall the title correctly) And the whole point of it was, that women are being discriminated against. Mainly she said that by putting barriers in the mosques to divide men and women, we are silencing there voices. I, being a woman, totally disagree. but that's besides the point. The point is I think she does have an agenda, I think As good practicing muslims, we need to up ourselves in all aspects of life, step out of our boxes, and be powerful enough, to not only officially bash this show, but create appropriate media promoting and dignifying Islam.

salamo aliykum
very nice artical ,true that knowing our purpose in life help us to know where to start and where to go if we get lost

I love you for the pleasure of Allah.
barakaAllahu feek
salamuwa alaykum
have you been to U.S or Canada recently ?
Yes, Canada, why?
Assalaamu'alaykum,
I totally agree with you, akhi with what you have written. I had a chance to watch some episodes and there does seem to be an agenda and I did not enjoy watching it at all.
Sad to say, from where I come from (malaysia) the same 'modernization of Islaam' is also taking place.
may Allaah protect us from falsehood and keep us firm on the Straigth Path, ameen.
May Allaah bless you immensely, akhi. Barakallahu Feek.
Wassalaamu'alaykum
Yes , the devil and its agents are clever.
They want to present Islam in a bad light.
Excellent post - mashaa'Allah. BarakAllahu feek.
SubhaanAllah, regarding point 2.(a), I remember watching an [Islaamic] program in which the host actually brought two people to debate the hadeeth about Hellfire breathing accounting for the severest cold/heat in the winter and summer respectively. SubhaanAllah one was a scientist who wasn't convinced of its authenticity, and the other was a Muslim who supported the hadeeth. The host himself also wasn't convinced...it didn't seem "logical" to him. What's more, this hadeeth is found in Sahih Bukhari. Allaahu musta'aan.
As a side note, this was also something that aired on Canadian television.
Wa Salamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatu
As a Christian Canadian your post represents to me Islam as the backward religion in expression it is today. My problem with the show wasn't that it was too liberal, but that it chills the soul that it even takes time to debate barriers in front of women at prayer, covering the whole body with that insulting black robe, demanding private time at pools and hysteria over a women delivering announcements. Islam does not apparently yet belong in democratic societies.
